Jonathan Andreas' Reply to David Friedman’s
David Friedman goes on to once again compare his estimates of the global private murder rate with the government murder rate and once again I will explain how this is a meaningless comparison in the debate about libertarianism.
Me: David Friedman goes to the heights of absurdity to claim that libertarians achieved the "abolition of slavery, the institution of large scale free trade, the destruction of guild restrictions on employment--most of the progress of the 19th century".
David Friedman:  But you are jumping from the claim that government isn't infinitely evil, which is true, to the conclusion that government will predictably tend to exercise its power in a fashion that on net increases economic efficiency.

[David] Friedman points out the intriguing datum that tipping in taxi cabs--almost purely a situation of paying for a public good because of social expectations--is widespread and amounts to over $100 million a year.
This indicates to Friedman that most people in reality don't get carried away with the economic benefits of free riding and neglect public goods when a developed social rule dictates that we should to the right thing.
David Freidman is right to call tipping a cab driver an example of self-imposed, voluntary, Lindahl pricing of a public good.

Friedman convincingly suggests that humankind's various and contradictory attitudes toward the penis have been instrumental in mapping the course of both Western civilization and world history.
Friedman begins with pagan attitudes: ancient Greeks considered the penis a measure of a man's proximity to "divine power," while the Romans, whose generals were known to promote soldiers based on penis size, saw it as an indicator of earthly strength.
To wit, Friedman closely examines the waning years of the colonial slave trade, when "the white fascination for the fl penis reached an unprecedented malignancy." Erroneous correlations were drawn between the physiology of fls and that of apes and racist theories were promulgated about the fl man's animal, hyperlibidinous nature.
