Born in Lithuania David Geringas studied at the Moscow Conservatory from 1963 until 1973 with Mstislav Rostropovich.
David Geringas' concerts with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow State Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Berner Symphonie-Orchester belong among others to the highlights of the concert season 2005/2006, and for the first time he will perform with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
On the occasion of D. Shostakovich's 100th Birthday David Geringas is invited by the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf to arrange and head a weekend of several performances dedicated to the composer.

As cellist, David Geringas has performed with any number of renowned orchestras including the Berlin and Munich Philharmonic Orchestras, the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig as well as the top orchestras in London, Paris and Chicago, collaborating with such conductors as Charles Dutoit, Sir Simon Rattle, Mstislav Rostropovich, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Wolfgang Sawallisch.
On the occasion of the 100th birthday anniversary of Dmitry Shostakovich, David Geringas organized a chamber music festival which was presented in September of 2005 at the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf.

Geringas received the Kultur aktuell Prize in 1992 from the Cultural Association of Schleswig-Holstein.
In 1994 he premiered the cello concerto by Gubaidulina, championing the new concerto in 12 countries including Japan, Russia, Slovenia, Lithuania and Belgium; his CD of the Gubaidulina Cello Concerto, with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Jukka-Pekka Saraste, was issued by the Collegno label.
Geringas was born in 1946 in Lithuania, and in 1963 entered the Moscow Conservatory of Music where he studied with Mstislav Rostropovich.

The Lithuanian cellist David Geringas (left) is no stranger to the concert stage, having won the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970.
David Geringas has also recorded extensively and has many cello concertos written in his honour, including the the Vasks Cello Concerto.
While I am one of those that believes that natives of a particular country tend to bring out the best in their fellow man's compositions, I am not surprised if Geringas does a very good job with the Vasks Cello Concerto which is dedicated to him.

Geringas has recorded over 30 CDs that demonstrate his unusual versatility, ranging from contemporary works to the early Baroque.
The Academie Charles Cros awarded him the prestigious Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the 12 Boccherini Cello Concerti; his chamber music by Henri Dutilleux received a Diapason d’or; and his recording of Hans Pfitzner’s Cello Concerti was awarded the 1994 Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.
David Geringas has been a pioneer in introducing contemporary Russian music to the West by composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina, Edison Denisov, Alfred Schnittke and Viktor Suslin, many of whom have dedicated works to him.
