The Head Heeb: We're Jews, Jews in space...
Rabbi Golinkin then made two conclusions: that kashruth was required in space (an obligation which, he noted, was made possible by the use of pre-packaged kosher foods in the military), and that Jewish astronauts are required to observe Shabbat and the festivals.
Curiously enough, Rabbi Golinkin's ruling was somewhat inconsistent with the advice of an earlier and no less eminent authority: Sol the Answer Man of the Baltimore Jewish Times.
Rabbi Golinkin accepted the idea that Jewish astronauts should be guided by earth time, but used the Houston home base rather than Cape Canaveral as the point of reference.

 Kesher Talk
According to Conservative Rabbi David Golinkin, who wrote an exhaustive responsum on this subject, the only reason to observe this custom is to preserve an old and very widespread tradition.
Talking to Golinkin, Singer notes that "the kitniyot distinction detracts from the joy of the holiday, causes unnecessary expense, confuses the significant (hametz) with the insignificant (kitniyot), makes people less likely to observe real Pessah laws," and most interestingly to Singer, "creates a schism among the Jewish people" between Ashkenazim and Sephardim.
Since even Ashkenazim admit that their custom has no halachic standing (Golinkin argues it is in "direct contradiction" to talmudic dictates), and the custom causes concrete rifts between Jews, it is incumbent on Ashkenazim to at least soften this peculiarity in the name of Jewish unity.

Rabbi David Golinkin is the foremost teacher of Halacha in the Conservative world today.
I will simply point out that the major problem for Rabbi Golinkin is that while he knows the Halachah, teaches the Halachah, is devoted to living the Halachah the same cannot be said by the overwhelming majority of Conservative Jews.
This does not mean that Rabbi Golinkin's effort is an empty intellectual exercise, rather it suggests that for reasons not dependent on him it is very limited effectiveness.

Rabbi Golinkin’s overview of halakhah on Shabbat morning re-connected me with a specifically Jewish language, one that has always spoken to me, but which I feel I have been distanced from over the past couple years since ordination.
Rabbi Golinkin’s presentations reminded me and Rabbi Rose of a core piece of our rabbinate; it is not personal opinions, or even the ruminations of a rabbinic authority, that have traditionally guided Jews through every day issues and challenges.
It is the rabbinic application of Jewish texts, values, and tradition, with an understanding of social and historical conditions, to a modern problem, systematically, and with an eye on seeing how to develop a holy society that stands always before God.

From: Robert Kaiser <rkaiser1@msn.com> Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 23:16:29 -0400 Subject: New Conservative Jewish Teshuvot (responsa) In 1997 Rabbi David Golinkin wrote "As has been pointed out on numerous occasions, the Conservative rabbis of North America have written hundreds of teshuvot but have not succeeded in publishing them.
In recent years we have begun to rememdy this situation by publishing indices, monographs and complete volumes of Conservative responsa." Since that time the Conservative movement and the Masorti movement (in Israel) have finally begun to address this issue in a serious way.
The first edition (Ktav, 1975) is no longer in print, but a second augmented edition is being prepared by Rabbi Golinkin, and should be published within a year or so.

In this case, perhaps a review of Rabbi David Golinkin's Responsum for the Israeli Masorti Movement is instructive.
It is not just a moral bromide that such action is not a nice thing to do, but a legal ruling that the person attempting to do a particular mitzvah has _not_ fulfilled the intended mitzvah through his or her action.
I confess that I do not know which section of his Responsum Rabbi Golinkin regards as primary: the decision proper (which addresses only practical issues) or the appendices (which address issues of principle, as well as some other practical issues regarding which he feel driving to Shabbat services is lethal to proper religious development).
