 David Gower
David Ivon Gower (born January 1, 1957) is a famous cricketer, former captain of the England side.
Gower was "forced" from the international arena by short sighted English selectors.
Witness a BBC sports news announcement on the English team to tour India in the early 1990s: in the background a scene showing Gower playing the Pakistan quick bowlers with ease; during the tests all other batsmen had struggled against them; yet in the team, no Gower.

This book by Gower and journalist Alan Lee reads rather like a 120-page "Life magazine" profile, and it's interesting to compare its uniformly sunny tone with the mood of DG's later autobiographical books.
In 1989, the superstar batsman had accepted a second stint as England captain, with frankly disastrous results; this 1990 volume is a forthright account of that difficult year.

Cricinfo - Players and Officials - David Gower
The fluffy-haired, ethereal-looking young man who pulled his first ball in Test cricket for four in 1978 was to be England's most consistent and consistently exasperating batsman of the 1980s.
A left-hander with a strong top hand, Gower's strokes had a liquid, graceful feel: in an era of biffers, he was a caresser.
He was out of tune with Graham Gooch's tote-that-barge regime that followed and county cricket bored him, so he retired prematurely into a career as a TV personality so successful that his cricket seemed mere preparation.
