[2002] Prozac, Suicide and Dr. Healy By Rick Giombetti
David Healy of the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Wales in the UK is hardly a household name in the United States and that is a shame.
One of the world's leading research psychopharmacologists, Healy's expert testimony in last year's Paxil civil trial was one of the deciding factors in the plaintiff's jury victory in that case.
Healy was making arrangements for moving his family to Toronto when he gave a lecture at the CAMH on November 30, 2000 where he reiterated his position on Prozac and suicide.

David Healy, an Irish psychiatrist at the University of North Wales, figures heavily in the sudden emergence of corporate involvement and COI in the bioethics literature.
Healy has taken the extraordinary step of posting on a special website, http://www.pharmapolitics.com, a wealth of materials from his dispute with CAMH, including his talk and a letter from administrators of CAMH explaining their rescinding of the offer to him.
Healy waited over a week after the behavior became evident before attempting to stop the medication, and even then, he claims that the woman who attempted suicide continued to take the medication because she felt compelled to do so.

Drug companies, psychopharmacology and the marketing of depression
Healy's central charge: The manufacturers of Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and the other drugs belonging to the family of antidepressants known as SSRIs (selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors) have deliberately misled the public about both the safety and effectiveness of their popular products.
In Healy's eyes, most of the patients diagnosed with mild or moderate depression would be better characterized as suffering from "community nervousness." Though Healy sees this condition as a real biological disorder, he emphasizes that it "could be due to a host of different factors such as overwork, stress, and constitutional deficits.
Healy dismisses the report as a "PR exercise." He cites problems with the data and points out, as other critics have, than 9 out of the 10 panel members have extensive financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr Healy is director of the North Wales department of psychological medicine, Bangor, which is part of the University of Wales College of Medicine.
Dr Healy says that, to his anger, Professor Coyne's criticisms of him in the BMJ were later passed to a journalist from Health Which in the UK by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, without an opportunity for him to refute them.
The Healy case has shown up the blurring of the boundaries between academic institutions, which are short of money, and an industry that has a bottomless wallet - certainly in an area like psychiatry, where drugs have become hugely important.

A year ago there was an agreement that Dr. David Healy would take up a position as Clinical Director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, CAMH, and a professorship in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto.
A week later, CAMH and U of T unilaterally terminated their agreement with Dr. Healy, telling him that “it is not a good fit between you and the role as leader of an academic program in mood and anxiety disorders at the Centre and in relation to the University.
The first remedy requested is that Dr. Healy be re-instated to the position he contracted for or that Dr. Healy be awarded damages in the amount of the income he’s losing.

In 2000, Dr. David Healy may have been surprised by the extent to which the independence of the university has been compromised.
As long as doctors and bioethicists at the university are for hire by industry, the process is necessarily corrupted because they become promoters of medical products and procedures that have a commercial value for that industry.
