 Houndog | The A.V. Club
Coming within weeks of the release of Cesar Rosas' first solo album, the Los Super Seven project (which features Rosas and David Hidalgo), and the second Latin Playboys record (which includes Hidalgo and Louie Perez) is Houndog, a collaboration between Hidalgo and Canned Heat's Mike Halby.
Hidalgo is apparently the busiest Los Lobos member, so he runs the risk of spreading himself too thin; indeed, Houndog isn't nearly as interesting as Los Super Seven or Latin Playboys, nor is it as fun as Rosas' record.
Part of the problem is that Hidalgo—who has one of the purest and most recognizable tenors in rock—hardly sings, leaving most vocal duties to the gravel-throated Halby.

Los Lobos were formed in 1974 by David Hidalgo, Conrad Lozano, Louie Prez and Cesar Rosas -- four friends from Garfield High School in east Los Angeles.
Hidalgo, who handles most of the lead vocals, teamed with Prez to write the majority of Los Lobos' original songs, with Rosas providing vocals and songwriting on the rest.
About this time, the L.A. music scene began exploding with a new generation of bands like the Blasters and X. The common ground with a lot of these bands, however, was a mutual respect for the roots of rock 'n' roll and creating new hybrids from the early years of rock.

Hidalgo: Originally, we did it all acoustic, and the drum we used was called a bom bom.
Hidalgo: Yeah, it's another old traditional song, "Ojos De Pancha." That day we went in the back and said what we were going to play, and Louie suggested "Ojos De Pancha." But suppose we play it faster than we've ever played it in our lives and see if we can get through it.

The side project of Los Lobos singer/guitarist David Hidalgo and drummer Louie Perez, along with the dynamic duo of Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake (who've done producing chores for the likes of Cibo Matto, Soul Coughing and Los Lobos themselves) has thus far resulted in two albums of incredibly strange and incredibly beautiful music.

With Houndog, Mike Halby and David Hidalgo have managed a feat that's rare in the dying days of the 20th century: an album that convincingly captures the spontaneous and earthy feel of vintage downhome blues, without sounding forced or cliched.
It can be hard to decipher Halby's deep, mumbly vocals -- sometimes it sounds like he's not just singing swamp blues, but literally singing from the bottom of a swamp -- but, fortunately, lyrics are printed on the sleeve.
Although the backbone of the arrangements are sparse lo-fi drums and sleepy, smoky guitar and bass licks, Hidalgo adds touches of violin, accordion, and lap steel to make the already interesting textures deeper.

For example, their latest album, “This Time,” has a cha cha, a cumbia, eight songs that I would describe as bluesy or rhythm and blues-styled songs, and a song that defies description.
All the songs are written by Los Lobos members David Hidalgo or Cesar Rosas in collaboration with Louie Perez, with the exception of the cumbia, which was written by Cesar on his own.
Other standout songs are “Turn Around,” which has a catchy, Claptonesque melody, and “Why We Wish,” a ferocious up tempo blues song, both sung by David Hidalgo.
