Hilmers' fellow mission specialists are Lounge, 42, a former Navy aviator and now a lieutenant colonel in the Texas Air National Guard and Nelson, 38, a civilian astronomer.
Hilmers will function as the flight engineer and, along with Lounge, is responsible for the primary payload, the NASA Tracking and Data Relay System Satellite and its two-stage rocket, which the crew will deploy on the first or second day of the mission.
As the mission's flight engineer, it is Hilmers' responsibility to look over the shoulder of his commander and pilot to ensure that the myriad of switches and dials in the cockpit is in the correct position and in place on schedule.
