David Holmes presents the debut album from his band project on his own fast-rising 13 Amp label.
Holmes is a selector par excellence is undisputed; in fact, I would submit his painfully out-of-print "Essential Mix" as a work of art which truly captures the essence of what a DJ is supposed to do.
Sure they have their moments--"My Mate Paul" is a gritty lil' piece of funkiness and occasionally Holmes manages to channel the fantastic (and hopelessly obscure) music he is famous for championing--but these are far and few between and much of Holmes' back catalogue stands as sonic wallpaper.

 Filmtracks: Analyze That (David Holmes)
Holmes, an Irish electronic musician, is a newcomer to the scoring scene, though fans of his funky electronica claim that his music has resembled the style of soundtracks for nearly a decade.
Holmes is also able to frequently insert layers upon layers of samples, and no better an example of this is heard than in the opening track, in which a female voice saying "oh, yeah" is mixed in at appropriate beats and even the sound of a wristwatch alarm clock does the same.
In any case, this score is an extension of the David Holmes style that listeners of his previous scores will be very happy with, but traditional film score fans will find it very repetitive and lacking the usual characteristics of a film score.

A keen observer of human nature, David's sweetly bent lyrical perspective seemingly focuses on many of the characters of the city, but a closer listen reveals a more universal view.
And while it may have been some time since you've crossed paths with him, David has continued to work on his music and has been perfecting his skills as a songwriter and vocalist for all those years in between sightings.
David says he is looking forward to putting his songs out there once again where people can hear them.

Then It Must Be True - David Holmes
Holmes has crossed boundaries on dance floors, in studio production and, in this case, as a soundtrack composer, for I've called him to discuss his soundtrack to Michael Winterbottom's Code 46, starring Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton.
The film has just enough of a sci-fi bent to come off cold and distant but it is Holmes' evocative score that provides a critical connection between the viewer and the film's subject matter, which at its core is a story about love.
But that improbability is precisely why it was such a treat to talk to Holmes and figure out how and why he does what he does.

David Holmes And The Free Association @ Royal Festival Hall, London : gig review
Belfast-born Holmes is arguably still known chiefly for his well-received soundtrack to Steven Soderburgh's Out Of Sight - a work that Soderburgh was so enamoured of that he hired Holmes to score his rat pack-less Oceans Eleven.
But with a short stint at London's Jazz Café to follow this special Meltdown performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, David Holmes is wearing his band leader's hat at this present time, and giving a public airing to the tracks laid down on his current long-player with his muso chums The Free Association.
That said, the Holmes faithful are out in force, and are much appreciative, even eating up MC Sean Reveron's seemingly spur-of-the-moment declaration that the Oval Office's current incumbent is an asshole - a point possibly not that revelatory to the converted throng.

David Holmes' 2002 mix album Come Get It I Got It was created in collaboration with Steve Hilton, who also works as a programmer/composer for Craig Armstrong and David Arnold, and amongst the freaky vinyl and deep soul rediscoveries, featured the pair creating some new linking music under the guise of the Free Association.
The song was recorded in New York in April 2003 by David Holmes with Rodriguez, who drove in from Detroit especially for the sessions because he didn't want to risk taking his guitar on the plane.
The "Free association" moniker was a playful alter ego of David's, which evolved, into a full live band (consisting of drummers, guitarists, bass player & singer...with David Holmes handling the mixing / D.j ing side of things).

Dublin, Ireland, musician David Holmes does, but based on the drippy imaginary "trailer" description in the liner notes, here's hoping he sticks to making music.
His second attempt to draw a chalk outline of urban America through unlikely samples and found hepcat conversations is coarser, less campy, and meaner than its starry-eyed predecessor, which might signify Holmes' growing discontent with the quality of life in our big cities.
An ad hoc act composed of musicians from various indie outfits, the Canadian-heavy New Pornographers play a decidedly lo-fi brand of pop music that might be compared to the cream of the Elephant 6 crop.

 NZ Musician Magazine
After a couple of received albums that have seen Gramsci develop an established sound separate from his solo recording persona, Paul McLaney and his guitarist/recording partner David Holmes are to be commended for putting the foot on the pedal and delivering a much more rock-based album third time around.
The gorgeous textures and crooning/soaring voice are still there, but McLaney, Holmes and their accomplished band have zeroed in on some rock roots in place of some of the electronic stuff which first brought them together had previously been prevalent.
Recorded and mixed by Holmes at Kog, and mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk, NYC, it isn't always convincing but marks a nice left turn from this highly rated artist who seems intent on regularly testing new ground.

David Holmes : Bow Down to the Exit Sign
A vast improvement over the intriguing but rarely focused Let's Get Killed, David Holmes' third solo album benefits from his growing status as a producer to watch -- and specifically, from his ability to snag the talents of big-name vocalists.
As on his soundtrack for the feature film Out of Sight, Holmes excels when he's providing a propulsive yet not overly self-conscious background for the prime focus, whether it's an action scene in a film or a song-oriented framework on an album.
