David Hykes (1953 -) is a musician, composer, author, experimental filmmaker and meditation teacher and founder-director of the Harmonic Choir.
Hykes was inspired by traditional world music of Tibet, Mongolia and Tuva, medieval Gregorian chant, North Indian Raga music and singer Sheila Dhar, Just Intonation composers La Monte Young and Terry Riley, and primordial polyphonic singing of Europe.
Hykes collaborated twice with the English theater and film director Peter Brook, contributing film music for Meetings with Remarkable Men (1979) and training Brook's French Mahabharata cast.

A long time resident of New Jersey, David Beardsley is one of the New York area's foremost microtonal guitarists.
David has studied North Indian Classical Music with La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela and Michael Harrison.
He has also studied with Dean Drummond (co-leader of Newband, director of the Harry Partch Instrumentarium) and David Hykes (Harmonic Chant aka overtone singing).

This is one of his best, as well as his latest, and even includes the reprise of a track from his newest CD "Up".While there are well-placed sounds of birds and dingoes, there are also performances by artists and friends as varied as the Dhol Foundation and The Blind Boys of Alabama.
Of special note are the comforting "Om Tara" and "Gaia - Hymn to the Earth." Her superb ensemble of world musicians interweaves violin, saxophone, cello, piano, bass clarinet, guitars, five string banjo, and percussion galore.
David Lord provides keyboards and orchestral arrangements, and serves a co-producer.

Recorded in 1986 at the abbey of Le Thoronet, France, the first two selections use the accompaniment of tambura, and the final piece on each CD includes a drum, otherwise these pieces are for 1, 2, or 3 voices, and the enormity of the sound will amaze you.
Perhaps one could describe it as a hybrid between Gregorian chant and Middle Eastern Sufi music, but in reality, this is an entirely new musical animal, one of a kind and almost impossible to duplicate.
David Hykes has mastered Overtone singing and showcases it here with the members of the Harmonic Choir (a group assembled by Hykes).
