All COLRs are established with an odd number of justices, in contrast to the structure of the jury as a decision-making institution, which usually entails an even number of jurors.
Justices and a Chief Justice usually serve on courts of last resort, but a number of COLRs have judges and a chief judge.
The head of that office, the state court administrator, is usually an appointee of the state judiciary, with the chief justice or the COLR exercising the appointment authority.

The memory of Donald Justice by David Yezzi
The flowers in Justice’s poem come to represent the former life of the abandoned house, just as the sound of music emanating from the house in “June Recital” awakens for Loch’s sister memories of the lessons she used to attend there and of Miss Eckhart in her heyday.
As Justice himself has written, this music, then, becomes a mnemonic device: “The emotion [in a poem] needs to be fixed,” he writes in “Meters and Memory,” “so that whatever has been temporarily recovered may become as nearly permanent as possible….
Justice wrote elegant and insightful essays and illuminating memoirs that also attempt to “hold transient life” in various ways, but his real work was always in verse.

 David Justice | BaseballLibrary.com
Whenever David Justice hit a home run for the Yankees the scoreboard in Yankee Stadium displayed "…AND JUSTICE FOR ALL," as homage to a man who had not always been welcomed in New York.
In spite of his injuries, he was always a winner, going to the playoffs every year between 1991 and 2000 (excluding 1996 and the strike year of 1994), and earning two championship rings, one with the Braves in 1995 and another with the Yankees in 2000.
But Justice maintained that when he took himself out of the lineup, it wasn't because he didn't want to play, but because he felt he would be more of a detriment than a help.

David Held: Violence, Law and Justice in a Global Age
The principles of freedom, democracy and justice are the basis for articulating and entrenching the equal liberty of all human beings, wherever they were born or brought up.
What is needed, as Mary Kaldor and I have argued (2001), is a movement for global, not American, justice and legitimacy, aimed at establishing and extending the rule of law in place of war and at fostering understanding between communities in place of terror.
And, finally, there must be a head-on acknowledgement that the ethical and justice issues posed by the global polarisation of wealth, income and power, and with them the huge asymmetries of life chances, cannot be left to markets to resolve.

DAVID CHANDLER - 'INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Pitted against the concept of international law based on sovereign equality is a new form of global ‘justice’, formulated in explicit opposition to it.
Advocates of this justice herald the emergence of a new, ‘human rights’ based order of international relations, arguing that the post-1945 framework—here, ‘international society’—is being eclipsed by the ethical demands of global ‘civil society’.
In the Middle East, in Africa and the Balkans, the exercise of ‘international justice’ signifies a return to the Westphalian system of open great-power domination over states which are too weak to prevent external claims against them.

The first part of the interview deals with discourses surrounding the definition of the environment as an object of political struggle and academic inquiry and touches on how notions of the individual are mobilized, consciously or unconsciously, in those discourses.
One of the problems I have with some of the environmental justice rhetoric is that it sometimes seems like you should never think like a chemist, you should never produce a toxin.
And, in that sense, the environmental justice movement is dead right in pointing to that as a critical issue.

That is the analogy that worked for Justice Stephen Breyer and, by implication, for Justice Anthony Kennedy, in light of government assurances that under the law, adult library users can ask librarians to turn off the blocking software.
To Souter and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who joined his dissent, the fact that this censorship, as he labeled it, occurs because of strings attached to federal library funding, makes it no less unconstitutional.
But the funding aspect was crucial for the majority, enabling those justices to scrutinize the law less closely than if the law imposed criminal penalties on certain Web site operators.

SSRN-An Excuse-Centered Approach to Transitional Justice by David Gray
Transitional justice asks what successor regimes, committed to human rights and the rule of law, can and should do to seek justice for atrocities perpetrated by and under their predecessors.
This approach is often condemned as a compromise against justice.
The article argues for an approach to transitional justice organized around the description and provision of an affirmative defense based on legality and defends the proposed excuse against objections from different legal and philosophical perspectives.
