First Measured Century: Interview: David M. Kennedy
DAVID KENNEDY: One of the traditional functions of state and local governments in the pre-Depression era was to undertake what was called "poor relief," or "outdoor relief" in some cases it was called, meaning relief outside of institutions, like mental hospitals and so on.
DAVID KENNEDY: For the generation that lived through it, I think the principal legacy of the Great Depression was to give them a sense of almost obsessive preoccupation with the security of their own lives.
DAVID KENNEDY: The war touched off a set of migrations in the United States that really invite comparison with the great immigration waves of the turn of the century in their scale, not least of all the enormous migration of African-Americans out of the South and into the North and the West.

David Kennedy, Freedom from Fear (I), Economic Great Depression
Kennedy accepts the argument that the United States was not substantially affected by the economic impacts of the heavy international financial obligations arising from WW I and the Treaty of Versailles - or by the product subsidies, tariffs and other trade restraints of the 1920s trade war.
Kennedy is apparently ignorant of the fact that world trade had begun to weaken in the second quarter of 1929 - that it had been falling below prior year levels since the last quarter of 1929 - and that this decline had accelerated to multiple double digit rates since the first quarter of 1930.
Kennedy is at his best in portraying the most important personalities of the time - the political considerations at play - the deep and broad roots of isolationism - the conservative opposition in both parties - and the various radical movements.

 Dadmanly: David Kennedy Revisited
No, Kennedy's premise wasn't exactly that the U.S. military is doing something great and sacrificial for our nation, and that we all need to chip in with our support, and all citizens should consider military service an obligation.
Kennedy's initial premise was that the military's separation from society could make it too easy for us to lose political control and allow the U.S. to use military force in ways antithetical to our principles.
From the thrust of his opening comments, Kennedy suggests that the U.S. intelligentsia (as represented by the graduates of Standford) needs to start viewing the "noble profession of arms" as a worthy calling precisely so that the military doesn't end up as a "professional killing machine" of ruthless precision and amoral intent.
