David Kilgour, of the seminal New Zealand indie pop band The Clean, is a man who wants to hurl the sound of icy citrus at you.
Unfortunately, Kilgour loses steam in the album's final act, succumbing to rehashed melodies and lyrics that border on painfully inane (see "A Head Full of Rolling Stones" for the worst offender).
It's a shame that the record is tracked this way, because these marginal tracks undercut a very strong beginning, leaving the listener with little especially memorable, except for a wistful nostalgia for the album's brighter moments.

MAGNET Review: David Kilgour   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Revered since the early ’80s as a founding member of drywall-rattling New Zealand jangle-rockers the Clean, David Kilgour has released an eye-opening series of solo albums in recent years that has done much more than fill the gaps when his band is on the shelf.
Kilgour’s last solo effort, 2004’s Frozen Orange (recorded in Nashville with members of wobbly-kneed local heroes Lambchop), was a wall-to-wall success: as soothing as a damp towel on a hot forehead.
Tired of the limelight in 1982, the then-21-year-old Kilgour penned “Getting Older,” a goodbye note to the Clean on which he suggested to his bandmates (and himself), “Why don’t you do yourself in?” Kilgour’s fertile recent solo works prove he got it dead wrong back then.

After a few years out of music, the mercurial Kilgour formed Stephen, a trio that also included former Goblin Mix bassist Alf Danielson and drummer Geoff Hoani; the group released a 1989 EP titled Dumb, but sessions for a full-length LP were abandoned when Kilgour signed on with a re-formed Clean.
Kilgour and Merge decided to stick together when the Clean inevitably went their separate ways again and the label issued A Feather in the Engine in 2001.
