David Kirkwood, 1st Baron Kirkwood, PC (1872 - April 16, 1955) was a socialist from the East End of Glasgow, Scotland, viewed as a leading figure of the Red Clydeside era.
In the 1922 General Election Kirkwood was elected to the House of Commons to represent Dumbarton Burghs.
Kirkwood was one of the leading figures of the ILP in Parliament as it came into increasing conflict with the Labour Party.

David Kirkwood was born in Parkhead in the east end of Glasgow in 1873 and worked in Beardmore's steel forge in Parkhead from the age of 14 until his election, aged 49, as Independent Labour Party MP for Dumbartonshire in 1922.
Kirkwood became one of the leaders of the Clyde Workers' Committee and was arrested during the riot in George Square on 31 January 1919, which became known as Bloody Friday.

The only reason the police even had a mug shot of Kirkwood is that, months before, he'd had a run-in with an ex-girlfriend over an unpaid cell phone bill that led to her obtaining a protection from abuse order against him, which caused police to photograph and fingerprint him.

David Kirkwood being detained by police in George Square during 'Bloody Friday'
Kirkwood was charged with incitement to riot, but maintained that he was batoned to the ground by police when he attempted to intervene to quell the fighting between workers and police in George Square.
As one of the leaders of the CWC, Kirkwood had been involved in organising resistance to the Munitions Act during 1915-16, for which he was arrested under the Defence of the Realm Act and, in 1916, deported to Edinburgh for the duration of the war.

Kirkwood joined the Independent Labour Party in 1914 and became a councillor in 1919, representing the Mile End ward.
His campaign in Parliament to draw attention to the effect of the economic depression in Clydebank in the 1930s influenced the decision to resume work on ship No 534, later the Queen Mary, which was so vital to the Burgh's recovery from the effects of the Great Depression.

Regions in the main asteroid belt that have been cleared of asteroids by the perturbing effects of Jupiter, named for Daniel Kirkwood who discovered them.
The Kirkwood gaps are due to resonances with Jupiter's orbital period.
