 5145 Pholus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was discovered by David L. Rabinowitz, then of the University of Arizona's Spacewatch Project, and named by him after Pholus, the brother of the mythological Chiron, after which 2060 Chiron was named.
Pholus was the second Centaur type asteroid to be discovered and was quickly found to be the reddest object observed to date in the Solar System, for which it has been occasionally nicknamed "Big Red".
It is believed to have originated as a Kuiper belt object.

The number of large asteroids that could cause a catastrophic collision with the Earth in the next thousand years is half that of current estimates according to David Rabinowitz of Yale University, Connecticut, and colleagues.
Rabinowitz and his colleagues came to their new estimate using a new technique for collecting and analysing the images of an automated 1 metre telescope in Hawaii.
In a related article, David Jewitt of the Institute for Astronomy in Hawaii points out that there are 100 times as many such small asteroids as there are kilometre-sized asteroids.

The discovery team consists of Michael Brown at Caltech, David Rabinowitz at Yale, and Chad Trujillo at the Gemini Observatory.
Assuming the reflectivity of the surface is the same as Pluto's, it is the largest object detected in the solar system since the discovery of Neptune and its moon Triton in 1846.

2004 DW was found in images taken on Feb. 17, 2004 (nearly 74 years to the day after Pluto was discovered) by Mike Brown (CalTech), Chad Trujillo (Gemini Observatory), and David Rabinowitz (Yale) — the same team that discovered the largest known KBO, 2003 UB313.
