In the late 16th or early 17th century, the hall of Mill House was floored and given an east extension and second stack, as well as jettied gables with billet-decorated bressumers and a matching porch.
A floor was inserted at Rye Farm and the cross wing extended north in the 16th century, and probably in the late 17th century the hall was truncated and its east wall rebuilt in brick with an end stack.
In the later 20th century it was renovated again to raise the upper storey and was extended to the rear.

David Laing (1774 - 1856) is principally known as the architect of the New Custom House in London, which was completed in 1817 and collapsed in 1825.
In 1818 Laing published a book of plans and drawings which included details of the problems he had encountered in laying the foundations of the New Custom House.
After the collapse of the New Custom House Laing was suspended from his post as Architect & Surveyor of the /Her-jajesty''s-Custom''s-and-Excise.htmki/H/Her-Magesty''s-Customs-and-Excise.htm">Board of Customs, and his practice was ruined.
