David was a superb violinist who toured the USA and elsewhere with Mantovani.
Although McCallum once said his proudest moment was playing the violin solo in Strauss's "Heldenleben" at a concert in Geneva with Szigeti listening to the audience, many will recall with pleasure his violin solos in popular vein when he led the Mantovani Orchestra (more correctly with Mantovani And His Orchestra, Ed.).
David was a thin man---gaunt, some would say, and with a great stern cast of contenence which led one critic in Illinois (USA) to call him "Stone Face'.

David McCallum returns to series TV
Nearly 40 years later, McCallum is back in a TV series with CBS's new military crime drama "Navy NCIS." He's still got the longish hair (a bit less blond, a bit more gray) and, as he turns 70, the same zeal for acting.
McCallum is glad to be part of the alphabet soup, even though it meant moving from his family and home in Manhattan and setting up a West Coast apartment.
He recalled an article that speculated that, were it not for "U.N.C.L.E.," McCallum probably would have made his career in England and ended up Sir David and a National Theatre stalwart.

U.N.C.L.E. ACTOR - DAVID MCCALLUM AS ILLYA KURYAKIN
DAVID MCCALLUM began his career at the age of ten or so doing character voices on the radio, having been bitten by the showbiz bug at a tender age.
Originally only marginally conceived as Solo's Russian sidekick with a collection of jazz records hidden under the bed, McCallum seized the opportunity to turn that very lack of specifics into an enigmatic foreigner with a vague accent about whom no assumptions could be made.
Despite the sketchy outline of the character, McCallum made the most of him, and had great success with the teenage fans of the show, as well as college students, middle-aged housewives, and the television community in general --- he received two Emmy nominations for the role.

Born David Keith McCallum on September 19, 1933, in Glasgow, Scotland, McCallum was surrounded by music starting at an early age as his father was a violinist (who played for the London Philharmonic) and his mother a cellist.
After giving cello a try, McCallum became entranced by such classic writers as Chaucer, Kipling, Dickens, and Shakespeare, which inspired McCallum to give acting a try as a teenager.
McCallum continues to act in both movies and TV, and retains a sizeable fan base, as proven by the fanzine the McCallum Observer, which is issued quarterly by superfan Lynda Mendoza.

Largely self-taught in classical music, David Axelrod is best known for his production work at Capitol Records, with Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderley; the latter who asked specifically for his services.
Back to the subject, David Axelrod is known for his great, and sometimes sparse production, having a tendency to open up the music, break it down in parts; nice for sampling, if you’re into that sort of thing.
But more importantly, Axelrod was/is an incredible composer, fond of big horn and string stabs, in a style that is no doubt recognizably his own, as one can tell by some of the tracks heard here.

Though it's pretty tongue-in-cheek, the danger our heroes are in is real more often than not; it does betray its TV roots more than any of the other "movies," with several of the show's trademark going-out-of-focus-at-the-end-of-an-act shots preserved, an all-too-obvious "To be continued" moment and at least one really bad use of stock footage.
Vaughn and McCallum in fine fettle, and Rip Torn having a high old time as the evil madman (and he wasn't even Larry Sanders' producer then), this is as entertaining today as it must have been when it debuted on TV nearly forty years ago.
