What inspires Mirvish to such gushing is nothing less than the most expensive stage show in history, at $27 million.
Mirvish and company have been avoiding the dreaded “m”-word for obvious reasons: ardent LOTR fans cringe at the prospect of prancing Hobbits and Orcs high-stepping to show tunes.
Two years ago, Mirvish heard a sample of the music to be included in the adaptation.

In 1993, David and Ed opened The Princess of Wales Theatre a block west of the Royal Alex, believed to be the first privately owned, freestanding legitimate theatre to be built anywhere in North America in over 30 years.

Ed Mirvish was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a Freeman of the City of London in recognition of his contributions to British theatre.
Mirvish took ill in 2003 with a severe case of pneumonia, and was away from public life until May, 2004.

David Mirvish O.Ont (born 1945) is a Canadian art collector, art dealer, theatre producer and is best known as the son of "Honest" Ed Mirvish, Toronto discount department store-owner.
Mirvish founded the company Mirvish Productions for the purpose of producing and staging original works for the Royal Alexandra and, later, his new Princess of Wales Theatre (opened in 1993).
Mirvish also operated the London, England, theatre the Old Vic (purchased and renovated by his father in 1982) from 1987 through 1998.

And I must say Mirvish is appropriately arguing against a shifting of standards and "affirmative action" as quotas for the military.
And for Mirvish to insist that no enlisted woman in the US Military ever killed an enemy combatant is so ridiculous, well, it speaks for itself.

Mirvish has served as secretary to the Art Dealers Association of Canada and as a member of the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board, and recently completed a term as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery of Canada.

David Miller is. If the money is not put into Lord of the Rings it is just as likely that the $3 million would be put into another production that tourists from Pickering wouldn’t travel to Toronto to see.
And the tourist industry still hasn’t fully recovered from the SARS outbreak and bars and restaurants in the downtown core are suffering from the no smoking bylaw and the National Hockey League strike.

-- Due to unforeseen circumstances, Edwin “Ed” Mirvish, Anne Lazare-Mirvish and David Mirvish will not be receiving honorary degrees at U of T’s spring convocation on Friday, June 13, at 2:30 p.m.
They will be receiving their degrees at a later yet-to-be-determined date when the family will be able to receive their honorary doctor of laws degrees.

Senator Jerry Grafstein, who with Cohl was involved in organizing 2003's Rolling Stones SARS benefit, said he was "wildly optimistic" that Ottawa would join in supporting the venture financially.

Toronto producers Ed and David Mirvish and Tony Award winning librettist-songwriter Mel Brooks announced Feb. 20 that The Producers would have its Canadian premiere at the Mirvishes' Canon Theatre in Toronto in spring 2003, making the staging the fourth North American production, and the third outside New York City.
A source in the Toronto theatre community said David Mirvish announced Toronto as the "point of origin" for the production, making this the third national company.
A spokesperson for Mirvishes said May-June 2003 is the likely start date of the sitdown.

The announcement, made by producer Kevin Wallace and along with David Mirvish, came just three months after the show opened at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
Toronto Mayor David Miller pointed out that the city hasn't enjoyed a decent turnout of American tourists since September 11, and current plans by the U.S. to introduce tougher documentation requirements for border crossings is also not helping.
There may be some light at the end of the tunnel for the production though as Wallace also announced that the show will be moved to London's famous Drury Lane theatre, with previews set to begin on May 9 where they hope to tighten up the production and bring it down to three hours.
