Mugar made the donation in 1993 to expand BU's Mugar Memorial Library, which was built in the 1960s with support from his father, Star Market developer Stephen Mugar, and named in honor of his grandparents.
In an interview, Mugar said he had not spoken directly to Silber in the past week, communicating only through lawyers, but said he was confident the Mugar name would remain on the library.
Mugar, who hired a public relations agency to help put pressure on BU by drumming up media attention over its reluctance to return the gift, had said he would file a lawsuit today if the money was not returned.
