Newman's breakthrough came in his first association with director Susan Seidelman, the sprightly 1985 hit "Desperately Seeking Susan" (produced by Midge Sanford and Sarah Pillsbury), and he later scored her less successful "Cookie" (1989).
In 1994, Newman added to the family's long list of Oscar nominations with two nods for his work on "Little Women" and "The Shawshank Redemption", opting for quiet, low-register tones in certain dramatic passages of the latter that would have elicited more bombast from another composer.

This isn't to say that David toils in the nether regions of film scoring, but he hasn't quite acheived the notoriety amongst directors as say Jerry Goldsmith, who in Newman's score for GALAXY QUEST pays homage to.
The Goldsmith influnce is felt mainly in the electronic element of the score, and the employment of a constant barrage of staccato brass and action rythyms Goldsmith has used countless times to great effect.
Fans of David Newman's will probably have purchased it already, but to those who have limited or no exposure at all to his music, GALAXY QUEST makes a perfect introduction.

 Filmtracks: Galaxy Quest (David Newman)
Newman employs a full orchestra, synthesizers, and choir to create a score that is identifiable as a sci-fi/Trek parody, and yet it stands alone with an often dancing array of themes.
The title theme, as heard in the original, classic TV show, is trite and shallow (which is something of a tribute to those small-budget recordings of those original shows in real life).
He utilizes a sort of blaster beam device (which, for those of you who are not familiar with the term, is the bass-heavy grinding tone often employed by Goldsmith in the first Trek film score), as well as that tingling electronic sense of mystery that was also used by Goldsmith in his early Trek efforts.
