David Sylvian (from February 23, 1958, Stone Park, Beckenham, Kent ) began his career as the lyricist, composer and vocalist with Japan, one of the most original and initially underrated British bands of the late '70's' and early '80's.
Although for a number of years Japan attracted a devoted cult following, it was not until 1982 that they achieved widespread success with the seminal album Tin Drum Taken from that record, the poignant and reflective "Ghosts" gave them their biggest chart hit, reaching number three in the UK singles chart.
The next 18 months proved to be a prolific period in terms of songwriting, and David Sylvian soon found himself with a new collection of material.

That's when the Skunk called his chum David Palmer, and Dave came out from New Jersey to try out for the job.

From the martial stomp of "David Watts" to the lovely, shimmering "Waterloo Sunset," there's not a weak song on the record, and several -- such as the allegorical "Two Sisters," the Noël Coward-esque "End of the Season," the rolling "Lazy Old Sun," and the wry "Situation Vacant" -- are stunners.

Palmer's very presence signals the one major flaw with the album -- in an attempt to appeal to a wide audience, Becker and Fagen tempered their wildest impulses with mainstream pop techniques.
