David Reimer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
David Reimer (August 22, 1965 – May 5, 2004) was a Canadian man who was born as a mentally and biologically healthy boy, but was sexually reassigned and raised as a girl in an attempt to improve his life after his penis was inadvertently destroyed during circumcision.
David Reimer was born as a male identical twin in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Although the book gave David Reimer more financial comfort, he had many other problems in his life, including a separation from his wife, severe problems for his parents, and the death of his twin brother Brian, in 2002, from a toxic combination of alcohol and antidepressants.

John Money - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This theory was applied in the case of a male child, David Reimer, whose penis was destroyed due to a botched circumcision.
However, even though David Reimer was raised as a girl and never knew his early history, he behaved in a masculine way appropriate to a boy while he was a young child.
As for Reimer, when he finally reached the age to make his own medical decisions, he was so distressed by Money's demand for further surgery to complete his "female" genitals, that his parents decided to reveal his medical history to him.

 Medical Error
Even as Reimer (as Brenda) plunged into suicidal depression, the fabled version of her life was accepted by virtually everyone, especially the feminist movement which saw it as proof of their conviction that gender identity and sexual orientation are a result of rearing and environment.
The tragedy of David Reimer, however, was considered a boon for science because David was born with a twin brother, Brian, who -- with his genitals still intact -- would provide a perfect matched control for their study.
Reimer's mother recalled that even as a baby Brenda hated it when she was outfitted in a dainty dress: ``She was ripping at it, trying to tear it off,'' she said in the book.

David Reimer was one of the most famous patients in the annals of medicine.
David's parents (farm kids barely out of their teens) were referred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, home of the world's leading expert in gender identity, psychologist Dr. John Money, who recommended a surgical sex change, from male to female.
David's parents eventually agreed to the radical procedure, believing Dr. Money's claims that this was their sole hope for raising a child who could have heterosexual intercourse—albeit as a sterile woman with a synthetic vagina and a body feminized with estrogen supplements.
