Buchanan states that shortly after his body was removed by the Queen's orders, and buried in the sepulchre of the Kings of Scotland; a measure the most impolitic, as it strengthened the previous reports of her familiarity with him (Ruthen 1815).
Rizzio's murder was only one incident in the larger campaign by Scottish nobles to contain and control the Queen.

David Rizzio (also Riccio, Richio, etc., c.1534-1566) was born at Pancalieri in Piedmont, northern Italy, about the year 1534, though he is sometimes said to have been older.
Rizzio was a foreigner, a Catholic, of obscure birth and his influence over the queen was bitterly resented by her whole court.
The unfortunate Rizzio, having already been stabbed once in the queen's presence, was dragged screaming into the next room and finished off in a brutal manner, every conspirator taking turns at the dreadful deed, and 'in their hasty jabbing often wounding one other'.

David Rizzio And Mary, Queen Of Scots is the first modern biography of Rizzio, "the stranger Italian called Davie", who was described by Mary, Queen of Scots, as her "own special servant".
David Tweedie describes him as "an intelligent and personable adventurer", and he shows how a trusted Royal servant can become both the confidant of and the principal minister to the sovereign.

Mary Stuart by Alexandre Dumas: CHAPTER II
In reality, to whatever cause Rizzio owed his power (and to even the most clear-sighted historians this point has always remained obscure), be it that he ruled as lover, be it that he advised as minister, his counsels as long as he lived were always given for the greater glory of the queen.
Thus Darnley was not mistaken, and it was indeed Rizzio who, in despair at having helped to bring about a union which he foresaw must become so unfortunate, gave Mary the advice not to give up any of her power to one who already possessed much more than he deserved, in possessing her person.
He thought that in ridding himself of Rizzio he could not fail to gain the day, since, as he believed, he alone was opposing the grant of this great desire of his, the crown matrimonial.

Mary Stuart in Nineteenth-Century British Drama
Works that treat her relationship with Rizzio in greater detail tend to find her innocent: Just as Terrell's David Rizzio, William Sotheby's 1814 tragedy The Death of Darnley shows the Queen as a helpless woman lost among the cunning enemies at her court, this time with Bothwell as the key schemer.
Thus, although Rizzio is murdered because of his attachment to Mary, the two plays emphasise that this is not the fault of her attraction but of the malevolent lords who pursue the Queen and all who are close to her.
In keeping with her role in the Rizzio affair, Sotheby's Mary is a model wife who forgives her husband's part in the murder of her secretary and wants to protect him when she feels his life might be threatened by the nobles of her court.
