David Roberts was born at Stockbridge, Edinburgh, on 24th October 1796, one of five children born to Christine and John Roberts, a shoemaker.
That autumn Roberts visited Normandy in northern France, and it was the artwork that he produced during this trip that began to lay the foundations of his growing reputation.

David Roberts (October 24, 1796 - November 25, 1864), Scottish painter, was born at Stockbridge, Edinburgh.
In 1838 Roberts made a long tour in the East, and accumulated a vast collection of sketches of a class of scenery which had hitherto been hardly touched by British artists, and which appealed to the public with all the charm of novelty.
In 1851, and again in 1853, Roberts visited Italy, painting the "Ducal Palace, Venice", bought by Lord Londesborough, the "Interior of the Basilica of St Peters, Rome, Christmas Day, 1853", and "Rome from the Convent of St Onofrio", presented to the Royal Scottish Academy.

David Roberts was 42 when he set off, in 1838, on the second of his important foreign journeys.
In the five years between the two journeys, Roberts earned enough from sales and oils and watercolors, and from commissions for book illustrations, to undertake this second expensive expedition.
For a poor shoemaker's son, who left school at 12 or 13, had no formal art training at all, but learned his craft as a house painter, then as a scene painter, his was a great achievement.

It's 1936, Spain is on the verge of civil war, the Nazis are threatening Europe's stability and Lord Edward Corinth is coming to terms with the decline of his own titled class in England made all too clear by the murder of three of his Eton classmates.
Roberts' character Lord Edward Corinth is a pale (no pun intended) imitation of Sayers' wonderful Lord Peter Wimsey, right down to the aquiline nose and the habit of getting information by acting like a befuddled upper class twit.
I particularly liked that David Roberts took such care to get the feel of the period just right, and to explain the politics of the times in such detail.

It was this same David Roberts - a straight talking ex-housepainter - who 150 years ago (in1838) undertook a journey which was to give the public of Victorian Britain its first astonished view of the glories of Ancient Egypt and Syria.
