Robinson was an outstanding all-around athlete; during the physical tests that the Academy gave all of its incoming plebes, he scored higher on the gymnastics portions of the test than anyone in his class, except for the plebes who were slated to be on the Academy's gymnastics team.
Robinson was finally able to join the Spurs for the 1989-1990 season, and he helped the team make the playoffs, where they lost in seven games against eventual western conference champions Portland Trail Blazers.
Robinson made the 1992 US Olympic Dream Team that won the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics, and he scored 71 points in a game against the Clippers late in 1994 to obtain that year's scoring title; Robinson went on to win the NBA's MVP trophy in 1995.

Robinson is the owner of NCAA records for the most blocks in a single game (14 versus UNC-Wilmington on 1/4/86), most blocks in a single season (207), highest single season blocks average (5.9 bpg.), and highest career blocks average (5.2 bpg.).
Robinson graduated from the Naval Academy with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and after being the number one NBA draft choice, sat out two seasons while serving in the Navy from June 1987 to May 1989 at Kings Bay, Georgia.
