  The Late Sir David Rolland Spedding
David Rolland Spedding was born on March 7 1943, the son of an Army colonel.
Spedding was then sent on his only foreign posting outside the Middle East, arriving in Santiago in 1972 in the middle of the growing conflict between the Left-wing government of President Salvador Allende and the Right-wing opposition.
Spedding was appointed OBE in 1980; CVO in 1984; and KCMG in 1996.

I've heard Jeff Wayne doing lots of TV commercials, jingles, as we call them before I worked with him with David Essex, and he's a very, very original arranger, his concept of sound is - he's the first person I've worked with who worked with a synthesizer.
And in those days, you couldn't program synthesizers, you had to adjust every day and every day the sound would be different, because the electronics would change with the tempertures and stuff, and you couldn't get a preset where you'd get the same sound day after day.
I remember once he had Ray Cooper lowering a gong into a tank of water just to get an effect, and of course he recorded live on the tracks when we were doing the rhythm section.

That man is David Shayler, the portly Middlesbrough fan and MI5 officer, who so notoriously departed from the intelligence agency in 1996 with a sheaf of secret documents allegedly under his arm, to blow the whistle on numerous malpractices and talk to the press.

Now I am even happier that I chose to go to both nights in NYC (one with the wife who was a major roxy fan - -because of me-and who attended many of the same roxy shows i did in the 70's) and the other night will be with the boys.
