Barnes & Noble.com - Books: Elizabeth, by David Starkey, Paperback, Reprint
Starkey finds that Elizabeth's early years ran the gamut from days of snug security as the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, and Henry's heir apparent, to the years of uncertainty after her mother's execution when Elizabeth was separated from court and virtually forgotten.
Starkey lets us understand, for the first time, the forces that made her into the formidable woman -- and brilliant ruler -- that she would soon prove to be.
Starkey's account is innocuously populist: he aspires to telling "a wonderful adventure story," in which allegations of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of Elizabeth's stepfather, Thomas Seymour, remain more spicy than disturbing.

Bookreporter.com - ELIZABETH: The Struggle for the Throne by David Starkey
Starkey will obviously plow that already well-plowed field in his second volume, but this one sets Elizabeth's reign in necessary perspective; the Queen she became was obviously an extension of the princess she was from birth.
Starkey ends his book with a fairly detailed discussion of Elizabeth's first year or two on the throne, perhaps as a means of setting the scene for his second volume.
Starkey follows this thread in her early life with special care and concludes that she never intended to marry but was not averse to letting people think otherwise --- all for the purpose of keeping her reign secure.

Starkey's account is innocuously populist: he aspires to telling "a wonderful adventure story," in which allegations of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of Elizabeth's stepfather, Thomas Seymour, remain more spicy than disturbing.
Starkey made sure that the reader understand that Elizabeth had a relatively good childhood, a wealthy landowner even before she became a Queen and her powers were quite considerable, probably enough for her half-sister Mary to take into account.
Starkey's enjoyable Elizabethan entry is neither biography nor traditional history, but rather a fast-moving narrative that turns Elizabeth's pre-coronation life into a suspenseful game of chess between the Tudor sisters and their respective faiths.

Bookreporter.com - SIX WIVES: The Queens of Henry VIII by David Starkey
Starkey takes the subject and makes it his own by shining his historian's lantern on each of the queens in turn, combined with the stuff and sense of her context.
Starkey does not cover any extraordinarily new ground, although he has a few surprises up the sleeve of his academician's gown, such as a careful consideration of whether or not Henry's inability to consummate his marriage to Anne of Cleves led to their divorce.
Starkey has made a sort of dual career for himself as academic specialist and media consultant, and that duality is reflected in his writing, for good and ill. SIX WIVES occasionally gets bogged down by historical detail.
