  David Starr, Space Ranger
David Starr, Space Ranger is the first in a series of juvenile science fiction novels Isaac Asimov wrote in the early 1950s.
This was in the middle of the cold war and the novel shows traces of this, both in its educational intent and in the nature of the social forces involved.
The novel was written at the start of the cold war, when many concerned scientists, engineers and educators in the United States felt that their country, and what they considered to be the free world, was falling behind the communist bloc in scientific research and engineering developments.

Review of David Starr: Space Ranger
To David Starr, Space Ranger, these deadly incidents formed a terrifying pattern—they were clearly part of a clever and brutal scheme by an alien conspiracy to cripple Earth’s economic life and topple its government!
This is the first of the six "Lucky Starr" novels, originally published in the 1950’s under a pseudonym as (it was hoped) the basis for a TV series.
Lucky Starr himself is strangely bland, but Bigman Jones is interesting (and oddly reminds one of Harlan Ellison—Asimov has this strange obsession with short people which emerges in odd places, like here and The Currents of Space).

The SPACE CADET comics, published by Dell, were by far the most visible of the space hero comics of the early 1950s; Dell's lock on comics distribution meant that all their titles were displayed on news stands, even when it also meant the latest issues of other comics couldn't be displayed at all.

In many SF novels, the captains of space passenger liners and tramp freighters will require all weapons capable of breaching the ship's hull to be surrendered and locked away for the duration of the voyage.
And if you are a space pirate captain who often has to deal with mutiny, you might want to invest in a futuristic version of a duck's foot pistol.
The same could be done with weapons in space: in vacuum you would be limited to a knife, and some kind of laser pistol or specialized slug thrower, but once you get inside the other ship, you can simply unzip the bag on your chest and pull out whatever kind of gun you like (e.g.
