		After completing a PhD in the biological sciences and a Diploma of Education at the University of Melbourne, David Stokes travelled to England as the John and Eric Smythe Travelling Fellow, where he took up a Science Research Council Post Doctoral Fellowship with Dr D A Walker at Imperial College in London.
		In 1974 David accepted an appointment as Senior Lecturer in Biology at Rusden College of Advanced Education and in 1975 he accepted a position as Head of the Department of Environmental Studies.
		David spent six months at the Environment and Policy Institute at the East West Center in Hawaii before being appointed in 1982 as the Foundation Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science at Victoria College.
