David Van Zandt, in Seattle, Washington, makes violins, violas, and cellos in modern and baroque setup.
For his modern instruments, David uses a 1742 del Gesu model, but he has ventured from the contemporary norm for Stradivari-based instruments in modern setup by offering an early Stradivari (1683) based model rather than the more customary "golden period" (1700 - 1725) model.
David’s work with Stainer, baroque, and early Stradivari models makes [him] a good source of information for the VSA Newsletter series on contemporary making [...].

I'm very pleased to offer this cello made for me to my own specifications and standards by a colleague with long experience in the craft of fine instrument making.
The instrument is based on the model of an instrument made by the celebrated Italian violinmaker David Tecchler in Rome in 1714.
As with my own cellos, the dimensions are on the smaller side -- 29 1/4" in body length -- resulting in an overall ease of playing and a fast response, with no sacrifice in timbre.

It may be Stradivari himself still clung to the Amati traditions in this respect, although we cannot help believing that the master would have constructed instruments of smaller dimensions had he received orders for them.
The violoncellos of David Tecchler furnish us with an instance of this long-prevailing preference for the larger- sized instruments.
He was without serious rival as a maker in Rome during half a century (he worked from 1690 to 1747), and was no doubt the privileged maker to the churches of the "Eternal City." Of his violoncellos we have seen many-at least fifty-and of that number only four were of small proportions.
