Tod Dockstader / David Lee Myers: Pond - review
(RéR) An examination of the possible reasons that make it high unlikely for Tod Dockstader to be more appreciated and, just for a start, more well-known beyond a tiny circle of aficionados led me to the conclusion that the only possible reason is his not being a name that's "in the fashion".
Fortunately, gems from the 60s such as Apocalypse and Quatermass (originally released on Owl) were re-released about ten years ago by Starkland; while a later work such as Omniphony 1 - Tod Dockstader's collaboration with James Reichert - was re-released by RéR not too long ago.
But Pond is an almost-perfect work that makes these kind of preoccupations absolutely unnecessary, and that in a way could be said to be well represented by the close of the last track, Corridor: i.e., extremely logical and totally unexpected at the same time.

Tod Dockstader & David Lee Myers | Pond
The electronic sound sculptures on Pond bear some resemblance to the real world events, insofar as you can discern insects, birds, and frogs popping in and out of the steaming mist, but for the most part this self-described “organized sound” collection is abstract, ethereal, and, well, extreme.
Tod Dockstader is a veteran experimentalist whose primary work centered around manipulation of optical sound and tape recorders; this is his first new full-length recording since 1967.
That's just the beginning of the story, of course, because the only raw ambience appears (briefly) on the first track, “Crepitata.” For the rest of the record, broken down into thirteen chapters, Dockstader and Myers scrubbed the source material, dopplered and reversed it and altered its speed, and came up with collages of processed sound.

★ Reviews of books about china
David Tod Roy has done Chinese literature proud by producing a scrupulously exact translation of this classic in Chinese erotica.
Jin-Ping-Mei's checkered history in Chinese literature doesn't disguise the fact that it is a very well written (and detailed) account of the rise and fall of an extended household, made obvious by corruption and its list of licentious dealings (both in Ximen Qing and his harem).
David Tod Roy's translation of the classic 16th century Chin P'ing Mei is awesome and right on the money.

One critical issue that I'd like to bring out is the way in which conversations happen and how these contrast (and may improve upon) web boards and email.  It's clear to those that weblog, but not perhaps to those that don't.
It seems to me that these are all related by the theme of pushing easy content creation out to individuals, but retaining an aggregation role for institutions, as long as you have the glue, which for weblogs is principally RSS.
I've spent much of today trying to clean up my computer after being hacked in the manner described in the linked article.  Actually, it appears to have been remarkably inept, since many of the batch files and.reg files were incorrectly written and didn't execute successfully.  Either that, or my permissions were actually right.
