David Patten was the son of Benenio (Benoni) Patten and Abigale Edith Cole, and was born in Theresa, New York.
David Patten became one of the original apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on February 15, 1835, receiving his ordination from Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer and Martin Harris, jointly known as the Three Witnesses.
David traveled to Indiana to investigate the church and was baptized by John Patten on June 15, 1832.

Marsh was named as President of the church in Missouri, with David W. Patten, and Brigham Young, as Assistant Presidents, on April 6, 1838.
As there was confusion over David W. Patten's birth date, Thomas B. Marsh was identified as the eldest of the Quorum and so designated Quorum President.
According to his sworn testimony, Marsh claimed that a Mormon invasion of Daviess County and the subsequent looting and burning of non-Mormon settlements, including Gallatin the county seat, were the acts that caused him to leave.

David Wyman Patten was thirty-one years of age, stood six feet and one inch in height and weighed over two hundred pounds, a man of great physical strength, absolute fearlessness, and in a day of great faith, noted among his brethren as the possessor of the most unquestioning faith of all.

David Patten was a missionary and apostle of the church, one of the most well respected, sought out for his gift of healing, and (until his untimely death in the militia after fighting off a mob) was considered possibly in line to become prophet.
I was reading The Miracle of Forgiveness by Spencer W. Kimball the other day and came across the passage where Abraham O. Smoot gives his recollection of David Patten's account of meeting "a very remarkable person who had represented himself as being Cain".
My old teacher of religion at BYU, smiled and said only that this story by David Patten occurred BEFORE the Word of Wisdom was given, hinting he did NOT believe it.
