He served as a junior minister under Margaret Thatcher, and eventually rose to Cabinet level becoming Secretary of State for the Home Department in 1989.
In 1990 he was given a life peerage, becoming Baron Waddington.

The title of Waddington, excepting the islands (which were purchased by D. and G. Ogden in 1823), with the remainder of the survey township of Madrid (see land titles in an early chapter), became vested about 1798 in David A. and Thomas S. Ogden, of New York city.
In 1803 the Ogdens, David A. and Thomas L., conveyed to Joshua Waddington an undivided one-third of their lands here, and for a number of years these three men were owners of the territory of Waddington.
The church edifice, of stone, was begun in 1816 and finished in 1818, and was built at the expense of the Trinity church of New York and of David A. Ogden.

I'm from a branch of the Waddingtons that moved to Lancashire from Yorkshire in the mid-19th century.
I am not a Waddington but in researching the Hemingway side of my family from Dewsbury I discovered my great aunt Sarah Ellen Hemingway married Solomon Waddington from Elland, one of their children was Albert Ilion Waddigton born in 1880 who my father told me emigrated to America.
