For writer-director-comedian David Wain, writer-producer Stuart Blumberg, and musician-composer Craig Wedren, the Wain basement was where they started out, as children and best friends, on their respective paths to success in the entertainment industry.
Wain is best known for writing and directing the film "Wet Hot American Summer," a comedy based on the trio's own experiences at Jewish summer camps in the early '80s.
Wain directed a video of Wedren's band and appeared as an actor in Blumberg's "Keeping the Faith." Wedren wrote the theme music for "The State" and also co-composed the score for Wain's "Wet Hot American Summer." The friends collaborate casually on even the smallest projects and act as sounding boards for each other.

David Wain, in my opinion, is the ringleader, or the Lord Of The Rings, if you will.
He seems to be the one that holds the trio together; the archivist, the director, the den mother, the father figure, the lady of the lake, the pied piper, the last hope, the guiding light, the puppetmaster, the Paul, and the man behind the men (giving his share of reach-arounds, I'm sure).
He also said he was on a plane once with David Wain, but he didn't talk to him.

Written by David Wain and Michael Showalter, from the MTV comedy show "The State," and directed by Wain, "Wet Hot American Summer" isn't a movie in the conventional sense but a jumble of sketches.
Janeane Garofalo, cinema's primary exponent of withering sarcasm, plays Beth, the confident but lonely camp director, and David Hyde Pierce, who ought to know better, is Henry, a shy physics professor who stumbles toward a romance with her.
Wain and Showalter operate on the presumption that summer-camp movies are an actual genre with its own idioms and conventions -- and hence familiar enough that specific references will elicit a chuckle.

Co-screenwriters David Wain (who also directed) and Michael Showalter (both from MTV's semi-funny sketch comedy show The State) display a keen fondness for the '80s summer-camp flicks they're sending up, but they don't create anything new or clever out of this affection.

One Guy's Opinion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Gross, smarmy and mean-spirited beneath its purportedly affable exterior, the picture wastes the talents of Janeane Garofalo, as the director of the camp where the action's set, and David Hyde Pierce, as a nerdy professor with whom she has a halting romance.
Their relationship is intended to be a sweetly oddball pairing of two endearing klutzes, but it's so clumsily staged that the real stumble these talented performers took involved saying yes to the script in the first place.
This misfire is the work of Michael Showalter and David Wain, members of the group that made the MTV series "The State," and it features several others guys from that troupe in the cast (including Michael Ian Black, whom some will recognize from his more recent turn as the snotty host of "Spy TV").

Of the three ex-State players, Wain comes off the best; his unexpected instant romance with a real-estate agent, played comically by Laura Interval, is the one moment in this first "Stella" that works.
