David Warthen (born December 10, 1957) was one of the founders of Ask Jeeves, an Internet information retrieval company, in 1996.
David is a graduate of UCSD's computer science and biology departments, and is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the School of Information Management and Systems at the University of California at Berkeley.
The University of California, Berkeley (also known as Cal, UC Berkeley, UCB, or simply Berkeley) is a prestigious, public, coeducational university situated in the foothills of Berkeley, California to the east of San Francisco Bay, overlooking the Golden Gate and its bridge.

 Jeeves Finds the Way
The way Ask Jeeves works, Warthen explains, is that incoming queries are matched up to a "knowledge base" of more than 5 million unique "template questions." If the query doesn't key into a question in the database, the site will ask the user to choose between a couple of variant questions.
The knowledge base, Warthen acknowledges, is "broad and thin," targeted to popular subject areas, such as entertainment and celebrities, sex, and the Internet.
Warthen says that "the whole Ask Jeeves approach is to encourage the use of plain English.
