New York trumpeter David Weiss leads both the New Jazz Composers Octet (which was responsible for bringing Freddie Hubbard back on stage a couple of years ago) and his own Sextet, both of which are present on Weiss’ second Fresh Sound New Talent album, The Mirror.
The hard-nosed and purposeful result is in line with the New York mainstream FSNT champions (several of the musicians on this record have their own albums on the label) and is generally more impressive than memorable or moving.
As a trumpeter, Weiss is in the lineage of Hubbard and Woody Shaw, assured and assertive as both the lead voice in the ensembles and a soloist, but not always compelling.
