 Anchor Duo To Succeed Jennings at ABC News
ABC News President David Westin actually offered the job to Gibson last week, but not on terms he could accept, according to two sources familiar with the process who declined to be identified discussing details of personnel matters.
Westin gave the new anchors the news Thursday, with Woodruff in his New York office after returning from Mississippi and Vargas on the phone from New Orleans, where she had just been dispatched.
Gibson wanted to remain anchor through the 2008 elections, while Westin was offering only a two-year tenure, with duties to be shared with Vargas and Woodruff in a three-anchor arrangement.

Though DISNEY President Bob Iger tells an upcoming edition of VANITY FAIR that he "should have been a bit more aggressive" in his defense of ABC's NIGHTLINE, he readily attacks Barbara Walters for how she defended the high-toned news program on ABC's THE VIEW.
Iger tells Margolick that the bulletin "really pissed me off." He points out that "it completely ignored the fact that someone from the WALT DISNEY COMPANY "namely the president, me" had tried to reach Ted from the night before.
