  David Wheeler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
David John Wheeler (9 February 1927 13 December 2004) was a computer scientist.
Wheeler married Joyce Blackler in August 1957, who herself used EDSAC for her own mathematical investigations as a research student from 1955.
He became a Fellow of Darwin College, Cambridge in 1964 and formally retired in 1994, although he continued to be a active member of the Computer Laboratory at Cambridge University until his death.

Since 1982, David has been performing, teaching, lecturing, and writing about the shakuhachi and Japanese music both in Japan and around the world, and has made numerous performance appearances on Japanese television and radio.

It is with great sadness that we report the sudden death of Professor David Wheeler, Emeritus Professor of Computer Science and Fellow of Darwin College, on 13 December.
David Wheeler was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1981, one of the earliest computer scientists to be so honoured.
David took his PhD in the University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory (then the Mathematical Laboratory) in the 1940s.

David Wheeler taught mathematics in secondary (high) schools in London, England, for 12 years, then spent 13 years at the University of Leicester, England, involved in the pre-service and in-service training of mathematics teachers.
In 1972, at Caleb Gattegno's invitation, he moved to New York and joined the staff of Educational Solutions, leaving in 1975 to take up a position in the Mathematics Department at Concordia University, Montréal, Canada, which he held until he retired in 1990.
In Britain David was active in the Association of Teachers of Mathematics; in Canada he helped to found the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (Groupe canadien d'étude en didactique des mathématiques) and in 1980 launched a new international journal, For the Learning of Mathematics, which he edited until 1997.
