David Whitmer was born January 7, 1805 near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania — the fourth of nine children of Peter Whitmer, Sr.
David was ordained an elder of the church by June 9, 1830, and he was ordained to the High Priesthood by Oliver Cowdery on October 5, 1831.
Whitmer continued to live in Kirtland and his counselors, W.W. Phelps and John Whitmer (David's brother) presided over the church in Missouri until the summer of 1837.

David Whitmer's testimony varied as to the objective versus the subjective nature of the experience, but he also spoke of the angel and gold plates in visionary terms.

This is Whitmer's most famous publication (other than his testimony in the Book of Mormon--although Joseph Smith actually wrote the testimony the witnesses signed) which most LDS would be shocked to read because they are largely unaware of the very good reasons Whitmer had for leaving the church and Joseph Smith.
He feels that Sidney Rigdon’s influence was the major factor that shaped many of the church’s doctrines (including the priesthood--which Rigdon was familiar with from his days as a mason).
Whitmer’s biggest problems were with the changing of the revelations and (later) polygamy.

Since 1972, John Whitmer Historical Association has grown into an independent scholarly society composed of individuals of various religious faiths who share a lively interest in the history of the Restoration Movement.

Whitmer in Richmond, Missouri, on July 8, and commenced the examination.
They were commanded to go to the Ohio, and there a law should be given them that was to be applicable to them in their then "condition and in the New Jerusalem." That law is the revelation of 1831 specifically establishing the one wife rule in the church.
The central figure in this group was David Whitmer, now the only surviving witness of the three, who were made special witnesses to the visit of the angel with the plates to show them to those chosen for that purpose.

The foundation for this criticism is strengthened by a quotation from David Whitmer in which he describes the manner of translating the Book of Mormon.
Joseph Smith would put the Seer Stone [previously describe by David Whitmer as a chocolate-colored egg-shaped rock that Joseph used when translating] into a hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine.
David Whitmer, in his description of the translation process says that Joseph translated by putting an egg-shaped stone in a hat and then putting "his face into the hat." This does not sound like translation by the Urim and Thummim.
