 Sir David Wilkie
The third of this patriotic triumvirate, David Wilkie, was born at Cults, Fifeshire, on the 18th of November, 1785.
His father, the Rev. David Wilkie, minister of the parish of Cults, was an amiable specimen of the Scottish divines of the old patriarchal school, who, besides attending to the duties of his sacred calling, was a most diligent student, as was shown by his "Theory of Interest," a work which he published in 1794.
Wilkie, indeed, was told, that in this most energetic of modern potentates he would also find the most restless of sitters; but the case proved otherwise, for the pasha was as compliant as a child, and was rewarded with a portrait that satisfied his utmost wishes.

Sir David Wilkie's Portrait of Sir Walter Scott (1824)
The portrait was incomplete when Wilkie left for the Continent in 1825 in an effort to recover his health, which had been badly shaken by a series of family bereavements and by the financial collapse of his printsellers.
Scott was 'deeply grieved' to hear of Wilkie's troubles for it was 'impossible for any man to have more admiration of his talents than I have, and yet even that was inferior to the regard inspired by the virtuous simplicity of his character'.
In January 1829, Wilkie wrote to Scott proposing that it be engraved for inclusion in the Magnum Opus edition of the Waverley Novels.

 David Wilkie
Edinburgh-born Wilkie's glittering early career was launched spectacularly on the back of a single painting, Village Politicians, following its exhibition at the Royal Academy in London in 1806.
Wilkie had caught the public's insatiable mood for genre painting and for the next 15 years or so, he produced a variety of exceptional and influential Scottish genre scenes, many of which were widely collected as prints.
In the early 1820s, he grew tired of the subject and turned his attention to historical paintings.

Wilkie's first album, 1977's The Mandolin Player, showed no traces of country/Celtic fusion, however; it was straight-up country swing, as was 1985's Shoebox.
In 1989, Wilkie founded the Great Western Orchestra with vocalist Cindy Church and guitarists Nathan Tinkham and Stewart MacDougall.
Inspired by the similarity between British folk songs and the country & western repertoire with which he was familiar, Wilkie decided to work on a country album with Celtic influences.
