Williamson rose to prominence in the early 1970s, with works such as Don's Party (later turned into a 1976 film), a comic drama set during an Australian federal election; and The Removalists (1971).
In August 2006 Cate Molloy, former Australian Labor Party member of the Queensland Parliament for the Electoral district of Noosa, announced that Williamson would be her campaign manager as she sought to recontest her seat as an Independent.
He is married to Kristin Williamson (sister of independent filmmaker Chris Löfvén) and lives on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

 David Williamson
David Willaimson was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1752.  While he was still a child, Williamson's family moved to western Pennsylvania and eventually settled in Washington County.
By twenty-five years of age, Williamson had attained the rank of captain in the Washington County militia.  His men probably fought in Lord Dunmore's War, including the Battle of Point Pleasant.  At the age of thirty, Williamson had become a lieutenant colonel in the Pennsylvania militia.
Following the war, Williamson was elected as the Washington County sheriff.  He invested much of his money in various business ventures, most of which failed.  He died poverty-stricken in 1814.
