Start with David Wingrove's obvious skills: his masterly ear for the English language, his ability to make fictional characters seem more vivid and unique than half the politicians we've seen on television, his ability to choreograph and depict scenes with the dramatic immediacy of television and the microscopic detail of a medieval illumination.
Perhaps Wingrove has answers to these questions, but he shows no sign of willingness to reveal them to his readers.
And readers are likely to doubt the accuracy of Wingrove's lavish use of Mandarin terms and lore upon reading his description of yin as "positive and light and male" and yang as "negative and dark and female." (p.

What’s more, the children of the original cast of characters assume a more prominent role, and their goals, while conveniently reflecting the paired-duality themes of Wingrove’s symbol structure, are not in simple opposition to those of their parents.
Where legacy was simply hinted at in earlier novels, here we see these new characters actually feeling the effects and, much as in his depiction of political rivalries, Wingrove excels at tracking the importance of failed understandings and negotiations within a family in individual actions.
There’s a plot between the T’ang and his latest Empress that takes up the bulk of the novel, but just when events are coming to a head, Wingrove resorts to his worst habit and takes a short cut to artifically increase tensions in the novel.

In the acknowledgements to this first novel in a projected series, Wingrove is thanked by his coauthors, the Miller brothers, "for accomplishing the impossible." Wingrove's achievement certainly is improbable, at least judging from the sorry results of other computer-game-to-novel translations, like the paperback spinoffs of Doom.
For with Wingrove's help, the Miller brothers, who created the Myst CD-ROM, have created a rollicking adventure tale full of engaging philosophical contemplations about the interplay between art and science.
The authors follow their hero, Atrus, from breech birth (and his mother's resultant death) into his uneasy relationship with Gehn, the father who abandoned him at birth and who now wants to recreate the culture of the D'ni, beings whose writings could conjure?or at least discover?worlds.

As cataclysm after cataclysm afflicts the Earth of the future, something has happened to David Wingrove’s ability to write a complex novel: instead of developing conspiracy plotlines and revealing character through action, he’s decided to write the novel as one might watch a videotape–fast-forwarding and stopping only for the good bits.
Too much of the important action happens between the chapters: important personages are poisoned, others disappear, others build spaceships, others build an invading army of FOUR MILLION CLONES somewhere around Pluto and fall in love with clones of other people!
