Since then, the band has grown in infamy: They've been banned in Seattle; the voice of the Lizard, David Yow, was jailed in Cincinnati; they've delivered multiple performances on the main stage at the Reading Festival; and they rocked the big stage at Lollapalooza in 1995.
The Jesus Lizard is comprised of Yow's unmistakable vocals and acrobatics, Duane Denison on guitar, bassist David Wm.

Sims, the driving force behind the band, stood stoically throughout almost the entire set, providing a contrast to Yow's outlandish dashing about.
David Yow jumped into the crowd almost immediately, exploring the territory beyond the stage to see what his chances of reaching the back of the room actually were.
If you've never heard the Jesus Lizard play, its punk assault could be likened to a horror movie soundtrack, with eerie bass-driven chord progressions, and Yow slobbering, screaming and moaning into the microphone with ferocity.

More importantly, Yow is gifted with one of the most atonal, animalistic voices to have ever hit the rock stage: even a passing listen proves him to be living testament to the notion that hate is a many-splendored thing.

Sims, following the latter's tenure in Albini's Rapeman) musters plenty of sound and fury, but only intermittently strikes sheer adrenal gold.

The Jesus Lizard: Bang - PopMatters Music Review
Between David Yow's shriek/yell vocal approach, David Wm.
Sims' lurching basslines, and Duane Denison's grating guitar, the music comes together in an orgy of aural violence that is scarier than any of these Ozzfest ingrates, three times as abusive, and distinctly original.
One might be reminded of fellow Chicagoan Steve Albini of Big Black/Shellac fame, appropriate because Albini worked with the band on their earlier records.

Instead, although not quite offering up melodic singing (but damn near on "And Then the Rain"), Yow's tongue clearly is forming words, perhaps attaining a semi-melodic chant.
