Variety.com - Reviews - Go the Distance -- The Lyrics of David Zippel
A serious oversight has been remedied with the long-overdue American Songbook salute to prolific lyricist David Zippel, most recently repped on Broadway by "The Woman in White." In an all-too-fleeting hour, a cast of distinctive guys, dolls and gypsies barely touched the surface of an impressive career that has already clocked in two decades.
While the tuner is credited as his Broadway debut, the lyricist confessed he and Wally Harper were recruited to pen one song for "Marilyn: An American Fable" in 1983.
As an appetizing preview of "Pamela's First Musical," Zippel himself sang his irreverent nod to theater scribes with "The Critic's Song." The show, based on the late Wendy Wasserstein's enchanting children's book, was one of Coleman's last projects.
