		Davidson happens to be one of many older private colleges that started as Protestant endowments and eventually changed their character in a series of steps that came to seem inevitable.
		The Davidson story begins early in 2004 with the board’s retreat, where it explored “what it means to be a church-related college in the Reformed Tradition.” The trustees unanimously concluded that “Christian faith and the Reformed Tradition” have been and should continue to be “positive influences” at Davidson.
		Today the college has eliminated most of the provisions designed to maintain that original, worshipping community, one of the last still on the books being the now parodic requirement that the college’s president be an active member of the campus church.

		Even while the trustees of Davidson College were meeting over the weekend of Feb. 4-6 and voting to allow non-Christians to serve on the board, students, faculty and staff of the school were collaborating in three performances of the Vagina Monologues, a play that extols radical feminism and non-Christian sexual ethics.
		Davidson, an academically elite liberal arts college with historic ties to the Presbyterian Church (USA) and its predecessor denominations, had already gone down the road to secularization long before the trustees voted to change the college's statement of purpose and bylaws.
		Davidson College was established by Presbyterians in 1837 as an all-male school.
