Topic: Davis Grubb

Annie Merner Pfeiffer Library -- WV Authors -- Davis Grubb
Davis Grubb was born and raised in Moundsville, WV, and he forever carried with him the traditions and lore of the Ohio River region and of the people bound together by its winding cord.
Seeking to combine his interests in writing and drawing Grubb spent a year (1938-39) at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, PA, but was forced to abandon thoughts of a career in painting because of color blindness.
Davis Grubb believed that "no one book should be like the others," and so he experimented widely with genre and technique.

 The Weird Review: Davis Grubb
West Virginian Davis Alexander Grubb (1919-1980) was a master of Southern gothicism comparable in excellence to Fred Chappell or, dare I suggest it, even William Faulkner.
It is Grubb's emotional, whimsical, bitter & intellectual masterpiece of Weird Gnosticism; he must have known he was dying when he wrote it.
Grubb was one of modern horror literature's brightest darkstars.

David Grubb's haunting masterpiece flows through the Depression-era landscape with the lyrical magic of a fairy tale as the children flee their malevolent hunter to a terrifying end.
This was Davis Grubb's finest hour as a novelist, and in my opinion it is every bit as good as any other piece of "classic" American literature.
In this reader's opinion, this novel warrants a little niche in that pantheon for Davis Grubb, whose lean, muscular and evocative prose propels this thrilling story, driving it toward the inevitable conclusion.

Davis Grubb tells his fool story just right.
Grubb adds a sentence of smoky poetry to make sure everyone takes his meaning: "Uncle Doc [the gunman] was one of those humped, huge men who, beneath a cloak of paunch, are cat-swift as dainty dancers and hard as sacked salt."
What Davis is overwriting, it turns out, is a marvelous sort of flapdoodle that does not fit into any category that book-jacket haikuists can think of.

Ancient Lights kicks the asses of both: and that is no easy task, believe you me! People have been trying to do it since the time of the New Testament.
And now, here comes this Grubb fellow, and his final masterpiece succeeds in tying the New Testament in knots, just like the New Testament did to a certain Old Testament, and then realigns itself with the good graces of the New Testament, just like the New Testament also did with the Old.

PUBLISHED ON 2/26/1954 12:00:00 AM In a literary age often characterized by intentional obscurity and rampant symbolism, it is interesting to find a first-class novel which affects neither.
The Night of the Hunter, Davis Grubb's first attempt at novel writing is mainly a narrative--grim, sometimes sordid, but at the same time warm and deceptively optimistic.
Adapted for the screen by John Davis, and directed by Anthony Asquith, the play loses nothing in the transition.
