Because of the rain, the Davis Mountains have temperate vegetation not found in the surrounding desert lowlands, such as yellow and limber pine, dwarf gray oak, Texas oak, and fl cherry.

It is ironic that the story of Fort Davis and its surrounding area has not been told from this angle; a phenomenon that reflects as much the maturing of the history of America (and of Texas) as it does the avoidance or denial of local citizens to delve into their storied past.

Jeff Davis County (J-5), in the Trans-Pecos region of west Texas, is bordered by Culberson County to the northwest, Reeves and Pecos counties to the northeast, Brewster County to the southeast, and Presidio County to the southwest; the westernmost point of Jeff Davis County touches the Rio Grande.
Among the animals found (and hunted) in the county are mule deer, white-tailed deer, pronghorn antelope, mountain lion, javelina, elk, coyote, bobcat, ringtailed cat, badger, fox, weasel, civet cat, raccoon, skunk, sandhill crane, jacksnipe, mourning dove, white-winged dove, and teal.
Fort Davis is by far the largest town in the county; indeed, in the 1980s it and Valentine were the only two towns in the county.

Fort Davis was established prior to the Civil War but was closed during the struggle, then reopened in 1867 as a result of the endless Indian and bandit attacks on the busy Overland Trail, which ran from San Antonio to El Paso, passing near Fort Davis.

Evidence of this drought can clearly be seen in the photos containing Gray Oaks that have turned brown, dropped their leaves and gone dormant due to the drought.

It is with great regret that I'm going to have to, at least temporarily, suspend the "in town" Fort Davis weather station.
I do have a "sister" weather site located in Elbow Canyon in the heart of the Davis Mountains that has a similar, albeit not customized, software which uploads data every 30 minutes to the internet.
I have not tried to maintain the breadth of data or reliability of the station in town, although at this point the data and consistency of uploading is greater than the station in town.
