Colonel Davy Crockett, recently defeated in his bid for a fourth term in the Congress of the United States, returned to one of his favorite hunting grounds--the taverns of Memphis--on November 1, 1835.
Crockett now advocated retiring for the night, for, while he admittedly "was in hunt of a fight," he said he "did not want it on this side of the Mississippi river." The crowd would have none of that, and they whisked their hero off to Cooper's, on Main Street.
Crockett, like Winchester, Polk and Houston, was strongly identified with Andrew Jackson--who would be elected president in 1828--and with the so-called Age of the Common Man. Crockett's election to Congress represented to many the rise of frontier democracy and a complete rejection of Eastern notions of social class.

Although he was admired for being a strong, hard and heroic frontiersman, the obsessive admiration of Davy Crockett was due in large part to his humor.
Much of the other writing attributed to Crockett was actually penned by ghost writers (presumably due to Crockett's lack of formal education) and was approved by Crockett before publication.
Unlike Thorpe's later creation of the mighty hunter, Jim Doggett, Crockett's role is used to further the myth that allowed Crockett to become a legend of the old West within his lifetime and for years to come.
