Toronto - A total of 200 Ontario municipalities are now officially opposed to the Harris government’s plan to privatize provincial jails.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) says all 200 have passed resolutions supporting publicly-run correctional services, and are asking the Ontario government to ensure that correctional facilities are fully accountable and staffed by professional, publicly employed correctional officers.
OPSEU president Leah Casselman says the combined message from the municipalities is one the Mike Harris government should not ignore.
