One more night and one more dawn, and, before the sun rose, the hills had grown smaller and smaller and the glimpses between them more frequent and, at last, far down the river, Chad saw a column of smoke and all the men on the raft took off their hats and shouted.
Soon the very hills over the capital could be seen, with little green wheat-fields dotting them and, as the raft drew a little closer, Chad could see houses on the hills--more strange houses of wood and stone, and porches, and queer towers on them from which glistened shining points.
His foot began to hurt, and on the top of a hill he had to stop and sit down for a while in the road, the pain was so keen.

In order to perform advanced DAW tasks such as multitrack recording, mixing, sequencing, a computer needs to be able to handle a lot of DSP (digital signal processing).
In the world of DAW, it’s about “better, faster, and cheaper.” So, before you jump, the other software names to seriously consider are Steinberg’s Nuendo, Digital Performer from MOTU, and Logic, offered by EMagic/Apple, all of which work on the “Native” platform.
While compatibility between DAWs is improving every day, it’s true that it is still not super easy to import ProTools sessions in to other DAWs and vice-versa (although it is possible).

Not only is this software fully open source and freely available for Mac OS X and Linux, but as it nears a major upgrade, it’s getting some significant feature support — and the endorsement of a studio recording heavyweight.
Even without Logic, the step is a pretty obvious one: there are only so many DAW features you can add from year to year to try to compel people to upgrade, so bundling extra sound toys is the other alternative.
