Dawson Creek is located in the southwestern part of the Peace River Country, 72 km (45 miles) southeast of Fort St. John, and 134 km (83 miles) northwest of Grande Prairie.
Dawson Creek is situated in the Peace River South provincial electoral district and is represented by Blair Lekstrom in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.
Lekstrom was elected mayor of Dawson Creek in 1996 and re-elected in 1999.

The locals generally refer to it simply as 'Dawson', but the tourist industry generally refers to it as 'Dawson City' to differentiate it from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, which is at Km 0 of the Alaska Highway.
Dawson was incorporated as a city in 1902 when it met the criteria for "city" status under the municipal act of that time.
When a new municipal act was adopted in the 1980s, Dawson met the criteria of "town", and was incorporated as such, although with a special provision to allow it to continue to use the word "City", partially for historic reasons, partially to distinguish it from Dawson Creek, a small city in northeastern British Columbia.

I pass through Crooked Creek with a population of 10 and 2 Mule Deer and 50 cows.
Apparently so many moose are hit on that stretch of pavement that the highway department put up life-size moose every 20 miles or so with warning signs to watch for the critters.
We pull into Dawson Creek at 3 PM and pay our respects to the local information center and museum.

Giersch found the cow "lying in a pool of blood with its tongue missing, half its face stripped to the bone and a deep slash to its chest." Dawson Creek (population 10,981) is located in northern British Columbia approximately 733 miles (1,173 kilometers) northeast of Vancouver.
Giersch said, "I've never seen anything quite like this." Giersch added that an incision to the cow's jaw "was too precise to be caused by a predator." No tracks were found in the surrounding snow.
